Election reform in Italy sparks opposition outrage: "This is fraud"
An empty parliamentary chamber

The electoral law reform of Giorgia Meloni’s government in Italy was passed into law in a secret ballot in the 400-seat Chamber of Deputies, with 227 votes in favor against 164 against. Opposition lawmakers protested the bill during the vote, holding up signs reading “No to the fraud law.”

PD leader Elly Schlein accused Meloni of changing the rules just months before the election and of fearing defeat. M5S leader Giuseppe Conte, for his part, argued that the country’s first female prime minister was blocking the way for other women.

Under the new law, a party or alliance that finishes first in both chambers and wins 42 percent of the vote will be granted 70 additional seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 35 in the Senate to secure a workable majority; if this cannot be achieved, the system will revert to proportional representation. Voters will be able to choose up to three of six candidates. According to the opposition, since the seats of the candidates at the top of the lists are guaranteed, voters are not offered a real choice.

According to opinion polls, the National Future Party, founded by Roberto Vannacci in February, could win 8 percent of the vote.
