The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, unveiled by Apple at its September 9 event, stand out more for their technical innovations than their design. The mechanical variable aperture in the models’ 48-megapixel Fusion main camera physically adjusts the amount of light reaching the sensor. The lens, which opens as wide as f/1.48, captures approximately 50% more light in dark environments; while the system operates automatically based on the scene, it also allows manual control. A wide aperture provides natural optical bokeh, while a narrower aperture keeps a broader area in focus and makes focusing easier in crowded shots. Apple used six laser-cut polymer composite blades thinner than a human hair in the mechanism. Physical control allows Cinematic Mode effects to be edited after shooting at 60 fps. Samsung previously used an f/1.5-f/2.4 dual aperture in the Galaxy S9 and S10, but discontinued the technology with the S20 series.

Why it matters

This approach means that a single main camera can physically switch between capturing more light in low-light conditions and providing a wide depth of field. The innovation is therefore particularly relevant to those who shoot at night, photograph large groups, and want direct control over depth of field. Manual control and the ability to edit Cinematic Mode effects after shooting show that the system is positioned not only as an automatic photo enhancement but also as a tool for video production. The fact that Samsung previously used a similar solution and later abandoned it demonstrates that variable aperture is not entirely new to the industry. The key unanswered question is to what extent Apple’s six-blade mechanism will differ in practical use from the earlier dual-aperture implementation.
