Why Does GTA Use Lookalike Brands Instead of Real Car Brands?

The reason why the cars in GTA games are unlicensed despite closely resembling real models comes down to Rockstar’s own choice. In an interview with Game Informer, the company said it is not interested in licensing real cars, citing GTA’s parody world as the reason. Take-Two’s corporate documents, however, reveal that the company has entered into licensing agreements with car manufacturers for its various products; in other words, this is not a technical necessity.

Rockstar’s goal is to interpret the real world through the game’s own language. The designs are made similar enough for players to recognize the real cars. The in-game brands are interpreted as being inspired by the following real manufacturers:

  • Übermacht – BMW
  • Pfister – Porsche
  • Grotti – Ferrari
  • Pegassi – Lamborghini

Creating its own brands provides a broad degree of freedom, from the car’s appearance to its advertising. In GTA, cars are stolen, wrecked, and modified; this makes it possible to operate independently of the corporate identities of real brands. Vehicle names, logos, and advertising slogans also feed the game’s parody sensibility. In this way, Rockstar can represent luxury car culture without using real names. Seeing Pegassi instead of Lamborghini in the game is not just a brand swap; it is the real world recreated with a slight distortion.
