Fairphone 6 Plus combines the company’s goals of using ethical materials and achieving high repairability with a mid-range Android phone that makes fewer compromises. A lightly updated version of last year’s Fairphone 6, the device features the newer Snapdragon 7S Gen 4 chipset and a new color option. Spare parts compatible with the Fairphone 6 can be used.

The $649 phone comes with 12GB RAM, a five-year warranty and up to six operating system upgrades. Sold directly in the US, the model fully supports T-Mobile and AT&T; on Verizon, it works with a SIM card but is not certified on the network. The previous Fairphone 6 was priced at $899 in the US and was offered only with Murena’s Google-free Android version, /e/OS.

On the Fairphone 6 Plus, 12 parts, including the battery, display, USB-C port and three cameras, can be replaced by the user. Repairs can be carried out easily with the small screwdriver provided and clear instructions. Fairphone sells the replacement battery for $39.99 and the display for $89.99; these prices are lower than repair costs for comparable Pixel or Galaxy models. The back cover can also be replaced, and accessories containing a wallet or flexible grip, as well as a crossbody strap, can be used.

The phone offers a simple Android experience free of unnecessary apps. With light to moderate use, battery life generally stands at around 60% by the end of the day; however, default performance is expected to be better with the high refresh rate, always-on display and light mode turned off. Although the Snapdragon 7S Gen 4 is adequate for everyday use, occasional stuttering can be seen in apps such as Google Maps and Pocket City 2 on Android Auto.

The camera system delivers adequate results in daylight. The main camera offers a 2x crop function and portrait mode, while the ultrawide camera produces noise and smoothing in low light. Overall performance is acceptable for undemanding users.

The phone’s main drawbacks are its limited IP55-level dust and water resistance, the lack of wireless charging support and Qi2 or MagSafe-style magnets, a display that is not as bright as the best in its class, weak speakers and limited performance in graphics-intensive games. The switch on the side activates customizable “Moments” focus modes that restrict apps.

Why it matters

Fairphone 6 Plus is aimed at users who focus not only on processor and camera specifications when choosing a phone, but also on how the device will be maintained throughout its lifespan. User-replaceable parts, shared spare parts with the Fairphone 6 and a five-year warranty make the maintenance process partly less dependent on the manufacturer, putting repair ahead of completely replacing the phone in the event of minor faults. Direct sales in the US and full compatibility with two major carriers expand access compared with the previous model, while the lack of certification on Verizon limits its coverage. By contrast, the absence of wireless charging, limited water resistance and performance in demanding games show that repairability and expectations for high-end hardware do not come together in the same product.
