The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family also includes a surprise Extreme model this year

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and higher-spec Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 platforms for flagship phones. The two models share most of their core hardware; the Extreme version stands out in AI, gaming and video performance, delivering higher results in CPU, GPU and NPU performance. Both platforms are based on 2 nm manufacturing technology, which Qualcomm is using for the first time in its smartphone chips. Their modem, display, security, GPS, memory and storage features are the same. Both models feature two prime cores clocked at up to 5 GHz and six performance cores clocked at up to 4 GHz. The Extreme offers 8K/60 fps and 4K/240 fps recording, as well as APV codec support. Actual use will depend on manufacturers’ camera systems, thermal designs and software support.

Why it matters

The announcement marks a new technical milestone as Qualcomm moves to a 2 nm manufacturing process for its smartphone chips. The distinction between the two platforms allows manufacturers to offer different performance and usage priorities based on the same core architecture; the Extreme version provides a separate option especially for users interested in AI, gaming and high-resolution video features. However, the real-world impact of these differences on phones will not be determined by chip specifications alone; the camera system, thermal management and software support will directly affect the outcome. This means users will not be able to compare models based solely on the platform name or technical specifications, and manufacturers’ implementation will be decisive.
