Consumer and Real Sector Confidence Indices Rose

The increase in the index was driven by consumer confidence and the recovery in the manufacturing industry in August. The consumer confidence index rose by 1.0% on a monthly basis to 90.8. The real sector (manufacturing industry) confidence index also increased by 1.2%, reaching 102.4. It was stated that the consumer confidence index was not seasonally adjusted, while the real sector data were obtained from the systems of the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye.

Declines in the Services, Retail and Construction Sectors

Despite the increase in the overall index, limited declines were observed in the confidence indices of some major sectors. According to the sectoral data released, the services sector confidence index fell by 0.1% to 111.9. A similar picture emerged in the retail trade sector; the confidence index for this sector declined by 0.8% to 110.1. The construction sector confidence index, meanwhile, decreased by 0.4% to 83.1. The data showed that the downward trend in confidence indices in the services, retail and construction sectors continued partially.

Structure and Assessment of the Index

The economic confidence index, adjusted for seasonal effects, can take values between 0 and 200. An index level above 100 points indicates optimism about the overall state of the economy, while a level below this threshold indicates pessimism. With the 0.8-point increase recorded in August, the expectations of consumers and producers rose above the critical threshold of 100 points.

The economic confidence index, which summarizes consumers’ and producers’ assessments, expectations and tendencies regarding the general economic situation, is a composite index.
