Panoramic Photography with a Line-Scan Camera
Camera attached to a train

[Philo] took extremely long panoramic photographs with a digital camera featuring a single line, normally used to inspect assembly lines. The system combines the columns of pixels recorded during movement using specialized software. As the camera is moved along railways and boats, the image is stabilized with accelerometer data. Although some waviness is visible due to vehicle movements, the method enables large areas to be recorded panoramically.

Why it matters

This approach places the recording of long, linear areas within a different technical framework, as it creates the panoramic image from data collected throughout the movement rather than fitting a wide frame into a single moment. The use of a camera normally intended for viewing assembly lines for this purpose shows that industrial imaging equipment can be adapted to other visual applications. Its ability to be used on moving platforms such as railways and boats enables recording in areas where shooting from fixed points is difficult. However, the fact that the image is susceptible to waviness caused by vehicle movements leaves open the question of how consistent results this method can produce under different speed and motion conditions.
