DEM Party Spokesperson Doğan: The Longer the Process Drags On, the More Vulnerable It Becomes to Infection
Empty press conference hall

DEM Party Spokesperson Doğan said that the longer the process drags on, the more susceptible it becomes to infection. Doğan addressed the issue at a press conference. At a press conference held after the party’s MYK meeting, Doğan made statements regarding the fund investigation and the Peace and Democratic Society Process.

The initial findings were shared. Doğan said that the first finding in the fund investigation, which has been described as “100 years of corruption,” was that the savings of more than 455 thousand citizens had evaporated within a few days.

Emphasizing that the current course of the process does not align with democratization expectations, Doğan recalled MHP Chair Devlet Bahçeli’s call to Abdullah Öcalan in the General Assembly of Parliament on October 22, 2024, and the first family visit subsequently held by Urfa MP Ömer Öcalan. Doğan recalled these developments.

The movement’s leadership took a step toward a ceasefire. Doğan stated that it had also taken steps toward dissolution and withdrawal from Turkey and had declared that it was no longer an armed threat to Turkey, but that there had been no comprehensive change in Öcalan’s conditions other than the visits by the DEM Party İmralı delegation.

Asking, “When will these conditions be changed?” Doğan conveyed that the movement’s fundamental expectation is for the doors to be opened to Öcalan in İmralı and for him to be able to establish direct contact. The movement also expects his freedom to be secured.

Doğan recalled the statements. Recalling the statements by government representatives that the process is progressing in its own course, Doğan warned that drawing the process out over time could lead to new problems, and asked why the Peace and Politicization Council has been kept waiting and when it would begin working.

Why it matters

The statements show that the DEM Party is pressing the government on two fronts at once: on one side, a debate over the judiciary and oversight driven by the fund investigation concerning the savings of more than 455 thousand citizens; on the other, political pressure over the course of the peace process. The message being conveyed is that, following the movement’s steps of ceasefire, dissolution, and withdrawal from Turkey, it is now the state’s turn; this brings to the agenda the question of whether the process will advance through unilateral steps or be tied to a reciprocal timeline. The fact that conditions in İmralı have not changed beyond delegation visits, and that the Peace and Politicization Council has been kept waiting, forms the basis for the party’s criticism that the government is drawing the process out over time. The emphasis that this prolongation leaves the process open to new problems demonstrates that DEM sees the delay as the main risk standing in the way of a solution. The critical question is whether the government will respond to this pressure with a concrete step or a timeline.
