James Gunn responded to a Threads user who questioned DC’s decision to make a Clayface movie. Replying to the user’s question, “Who even asked for a Clayface movie?”, Gunn pointed out that films in Hollywood are not made by popular vote.
Films Gunn cited as examples:
- Back to the Future
- Casablanca
- There’s Something About Mary
- Pan’s Labyrinth
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- Weapons
- The Matrix
Gunn said that sometimes inspiration comes from a lesser-known character, something done first by Mike Flanagan and then by James Watkins and Hossein Amini. He stated that he would prefer this kind of inspiration over a soulless script written solely for money by a writer about a popular character they have no interest in.
Gunn also made a statement last week following a post by Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr. in Superman and Peacemaker, which implied that Adria Arjona would play Wonder Woman. Gunn said that Grillo did not know whom Arjona was playing or whether she had a small cameo role in Man of Tomorrow.
Clayface will hit theaters on October 23. In the film, 34-year-old Tom Rhys Harries plays Clayface, also known as Matt Hagen. Hagen’s rise is cut short when his face is disfigured by a crime boss.
The actors joining Harries in the cast:
- Naomi Ackie
- David Dencik
- Max Minghella
- Eddie Marsan
The film will reach audiences following Supergirl, which hit theaters in the summer, and the HBO series Lanterns.
