19-year-old Aran Murphy made his first solo red carpet appearance at a screening of the HBO series Youth in London on Friday. He plays the son of Sharon Horgan, who portrays a 50-year-old divorced woman dealing with dating, family life and caring for her aging parents.

After seeing photos and interview videos, social media users wrote that Aran resembled his Oscar-winning father, Cillian Murphy, not only in appearance but also in his voice, expressions and mannerisms. The interview shared by Jodie McCallum on TikTok was viewed more than 4 million times. Aran said that while Millennials are considered “embarrassing,” his own generation does things that are at least just as similar.

Cillian Murphy had described Hollywood’s publicity system as “a broken model” during the Oppenheimer press tour. Murphy, who has been married to Yvonne McGuinness since 2004, also has a 20-year-old son named Malachy in addition to Aran. In 2023, Murphy described his sons as “really good kids.” Aran will appear in War, starring Sienna Miller and Dominic West; the series will premiere on HBO on October 1.

Why it matters

The interest in Aran Murphy, driven largely not by his acting but by perceived physical and behavioral similarities to his father, shows that the young actor is currently being assessed through his family connection. While the interview video’s more than 4 million views demonstrate the power of red-carpet appearances and short-form social media content to introduce a new actor to a broad audience, they also create a clear contrast with the Hollywood publicity model criticized by Cillian Murphy. This visibility is relevant both to Youth viewers and to audiences who will follow Aran’s role in War; however, public discussion still focuses more on the similarities than on his performances in the productions. The question that remains is whether Aran’s own acting identity will be assessed independently of comparisons with his family.
