Istanbul Governor’s Office announced that the Üsküdar acting mayor election will be held again on Saturday, September 5, after the Regional Administrative Court rejected the appeal against the decision to suspend the execution.

Following Sinem Dedetaş’s arrest and removal from office on July 31, the election held on August 5 was won by CHP candidate Sibel Tan Çetinkaya. Upon an appeal by AK Party council members, Istanbul’s 2nd Administrative Court issued a decision to suspend the execution, while Çetinkaya’s lawyers’ appeal against this decision was rejected by the Regional Administrative Court.

Why it matters

This development shows that the acting mayoral position in Üsküdar is being shaped not only by a vote within the municipal council but also by the ongoing legal process. The decision to suspend the execution issued after the previous election demonstrated that representation in the municipal administration could not proceed independently of legal challenges. The renewed vote will bring back to the council’s agenda the political balance that emerged after the first election, which ended in favor of the CHP candidate. The key question left open by the process is whether the outcome of the election to be held on September 5 will face another appeal and on what legal basis the acting mayoral position will continue.
