Bakırhan appeals to mothers: Mothers should support the process most of all
Elderly hands clasped together

DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan said at a public meeting in Istanbul’s Okmeydanı neighborhood that they would discuss together what kind of discourse and organizational practice would be used to address the ongoing process. Saying that mothers should not have to suffer the pain of losing a child again, Bakırhan called on the Peace Mothers, mothers of martyrs and Saturday Mothers to support the process.

Why it matters

The focus of the statement is that the discussion is not limited to the discourse of political actors, but also includes what kind of organizational practice will be used to sustain the ongoing process. Within this framework, the call to involve groups with different experiences, such as the Peace Mothers, mothers of martyrs and Saturday Mothers, points to a search for social participation in the process. The emphasis on mothers not having to suffer the pain of losing a child again highlights the process’s humanitarian consequences and the expectation that new losses will be prevented. However, the concrete methods through which the discussion on discourse and organization mentioned at the meeting will be conducted, as well as how the groups being called upon will participate in the process, remain unclear. Therefore, the development creates a basis for discussion about how the process will be established rather than about its outcome.
