Audacity 4, the completely redesigned version of the “world’s most popular” audio editor
Modern audio studio desk

Audacity 4 is comprehensively revamping the software that aims to be “the world’s most popular” audio editing and recording application. The biggest change is a nondestructive editing system that allows trimmed audio clips to be expanded again by dragging their edges. Clips can now be layered on the timeline, allowing audio to be added and edited later even when there is not enough space. Splitting, cutting and rearranging clips have also been made easier.

While renewing clip envelopes and built-in effects, the developers added a home screen with redesigned project management. The interface has been made more compatible with other Muse products such as Muse Score and Audio.com through customizable themes. Audacity had largely retained its basic design since its release in 2000; the new version brings the application closer to a modern digital audio workstation. During the development of Audacity 4, there was also a brief controversy last year over the new logo design. According to a review dated September 4, 2026, the final icon was received more positively than the initial design that circulated last October.

Why it matters

For long-time Audacity users, the main impact of the update may be that it reduces the risk of changes made while working on audio tracks breaking the project and makes the space issue on the timeline more manageable. This is changing how the software can be used not only for basic cutting and recording tasks, but also for work requiring more intensive clip editing. The redesigned home screen and project management features emphasize switching between different projects, while the interface’s compatibility with Muse products strengthens the application’s position as more than a standalone tool. The remaining question is to what extent these extensive interface and workflow changes will fit with the usage habits Audacity has maintained for many years.
