Apple’s Smart Home Hub Emerges in Code: Set to Offer Personalization with a Camera and Ambient Sensor

Code snippets found in Apple’s software updates continue to provide information about the company’s planned new hardware approach for its smart home ecosystem. Recently, devices Apple has not yet announced were identified in macOS Tahoe 26.7 code, and the first indications of systems focused on smart homes were uncovered. New data that emerged in the release candidate (RC) build reveals details about the advanced personalization and user recognition technologies the tech giant plans to use in its next-generation smart home hub.

User Recognition Through Advanced Sensors and Cameras

Strings found in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 RC code indicate that the device will support multiple user profiles. The Personal Content feature will identify the user in front of the device and display data tailored to that person on the screen. The feature, which can be enabled from the Settings menu or Control Center, will use integrated cameras and environmental sensing sensors for authentication.

Some command lines identified in the software code contain clear details about how the security and recognition system operates.

If the device has been unable to detect the user for some time, a text string in the system displays the warning, “Sorry, this device hasn’t seen you for a while. Please try again in front of the camera.” Another message asks the user to move directly into the camera’s field of view in front of the screen.

Two Separate Models and Design Features

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its smart home hub in two different form factors. The model designed for desktop use with a speaker-equipped base carries the codename J490, while the wall-mountable version is referred to by the codename J491. The code includes the definitions HomeAccessory and HomeAccessory_wall for the devices. The device, which is expected to feature an LCD screen approximately 18 centimeters in size, is projected to be powered by an A18 processor so it can run artificial intelligence tasks requiring high processing power locally.

Software Infrastructure and the homeOS Ecosystem

The term Pebble found in the system code appears to be the codename for homeOS, the operating system the company is developing for its smart home devices.

The user interface is said to be built on the tvOS infrastructure, but it will reportedly offer customizable widget options such as Faces and Face Gallery, similar to the interface on Apple Watch. The system will also be able to detect nearby paired smartphones and display personal data with a focus on privacy.
