According to TÜİK data, the CPI increased by 1.84% month on month and 31.51% year on year in August 2026. The highest annual increase was recorded in the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels group, at 39.77%.
The highest monthly increase was recorded in the transport group, at 4.82%. The annual increase was 33.79% in food and non-alcoholic beverages and 35.08% in transport. Increases were recorded in 134 of the 174 subgroups in the index.
Why it matters
The data show that price increases are not limited to a single area of spending, but are concentrated to varying degrees in groups with a direct impact on household budgets, such as housing and basic services, transport, and food. The annual increase in housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels reveals that housing and energy expenses are the area under the strongest pressure, while the monthly rise in transport stands out in the short term in terms of mobility and transportation costs. The annual increase in food and non-alcoholic beverages also indicates that daily consumer spending continues to account for a significant share of inflation. Although increases in most subgroups show that the picture is not specific to a limited number of products, it remains unclear which items contributed most to this widespread pattern.
