Volkswagen is changing its numerical naming policy, which has been criticized for confusing consumers. Following the ID. Polo, the facelifted ID.4 will be named “ID. Tiguan,” as confirmed by Volkswagen.

  • The Tiguan name has surpassed 8.3 million sales over the past 20 years.
  • The ID. Tiguan will continue to use the MEB platform dedicated to electric vehicles, while the combustion-engine Tiguan will be produced on MQB.
  • The model will be unveiled at the beginning of October and is expected to go on sale in Europe early next year.

Why it matters

Volkswagen’s move aims to help consumers understand the relationships between models more easily by positioning electric and combustion-engine models under the same family names. However, the fact that the same Tiguan name will cover two vehicles produced on different platforms also raises the question of how clearly the technical differences will be communicated while reducing naming confusion. The distinction between the vehicles’ underlying architecture and driving characteristics will become important, particularly for current Tiguan users and those considering switching to electric vehicles, even though they share the same body name. The Tiguan name’s strong sales record could give Volkswagen a high level of recognition with which to introduce its electric model; by contrast, the extent to which this recognition will carry over to the electric version will become clear during the launch and sales process.
