Turkmenistan did what the US, China and Russia did not

According to UN data, Turkmenistan has taken action in response to major methane emissions. The UN Environment Programme’s Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) detected 192 cases in the country last year. Turkmenistan responded to approximately 20% of the alerts, halted 8 leaks and prepared plans to address the others. Although the UN described this as an “incredible first step,” the country remains one of the world’s largest sources of methane; three of the 6 most serious leaks identified in the past 6 months were located there. MARS manager Meghan Demeter described the development as a turning point. The United States, which ranked second with 138 cases, did not respond, while Iran, Russia and China adopted the same stance. Mexico, Brazil and Argentina responded to all alerts. Methane traps approximately 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide over 20 years and is considered responsible for 25% of global warming.

Why it matters

Turkmenistan’s response to the alerts shows that international monitoring mechanisms can not only identify problems but also trigger steps to reduce emissions. However, the limited number of interventions demonstrates that the cooperation of national authorities is decisive in reducing high methane emissions. Differences in response levels among countries show that the UN system’s generation of alerts alone is not sufficient and that the follow-up process is important. For Turkmenistan, the open question is to what extent the plans prepared will address the remaining leaks; for other major sources, it is why the alerts were left unanswered. Methane’s powerful heat-trapping effect over a short period makes these differences directly relevant to the fight against global warming.
