German smart home company Tado has introduced the second generation of its Smart Thermostat X, targeting Google Nest users in Europe. Google’s decision to shut down the servers for its first- and second-generation thermostats significantly boosted Tado sales. Tado co-founder Christian Deilmann said the third-generation Nest is at least 10 times more widespread in Europe, but Google may also stop supporting this model in the future.
The Smart Thermostat X is priced at £159.99/€179.99 with a wired starter kit and £169.99/€199.99 with a wireless kit. The device has a white square design, a circular interface that appears when touched, and a thickness of 17.8mm, as well as a customizable button. The rechargeable-battery version operates for one year. The thermostat is compatible with boilers, heat pumps and underfloor heating systems, but does not support air conditioning.
Matter-over-Thread connectivity allows the device to communicate with a receiver next to the boiler and with most smart home platforms. Tado is also introducing the ability to manage multiple thermostats in different homes through a single account. The hydronic balancing system that works with the Smart Radiator Thermostat X has received TÜV certification; the system helps digitally balance radiators and makes them eligible for heat pump incentives in some markets.
This feature requires the paid AI Assist service, which costs £3.99 per month or £29.99 per year. The service optimizes heating based on the weather and the characteristics of the home; it offers automatic location detection, open-window detection, adaptive heating and preheating before arrival. Tado announced that the products can be returned and the fee refunded if it is believed that sufficient energy savings have not been achieved within the first 12 months. As of Sep 2, 2026, the product is available on Tado’s website and from selected European retailers.
Why it matters
Google’s decision to end server support for its older Nest thermostats shows that long-term software support can influence users’ decisions about smart heating products just as much as hardware features. For this reason, Tado’s product is relevant not only to those looking for a new thermostat, but also to users in Europe concerned about the future of their existing Nest system. However, the fact that the third-generation Nest is more widespread leaves open the question of whether a similar support issue would affect a broader group of users. While the product’s compatibility with boilers, heat pumps and underfloor heating expands its potential use cases, the lack of air-conditioning support limits its scope; advanced automation and energy optimization, meanwhile, depend on the separately paid AI Assist service.
