Son of Thanjai to launch in 2027 with Game Pass support
Ancient South Indian temple

Ayelet Studio has announced that Son of Thanjai, an action-adventure game set in 11th-century South India, will launch in spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. The game will also be available on Game Pass at launch.

Players will control a Chola king attempting to protect his throne and people in Tanjavur. In addition to stealth and direct combat options, the game will offer the use of horses, elephants, and bulls. Combat with the whip-sword known as the Surulvaal will be supported by a close-quarters combat system inspired by Kalarippayattu. The world will also feature cultural events from the period and interactions with different social groups.

Why it matters

By focusing on 11th-century South India, Son of Thanjai combines the action-adventure genre with the political and cultural context of the Chola period. The choice between stealth and direct combat, along with the ability to use different animals, shows that progression is not based solely on weapon use. Cultural events and interactions with different social groups also make the aspects of governing Tanjavur beyond warfare part of the game. While the game’s availability across multiple platforms and through Game Pass expands access options, the announcement does not provide details on how these elements will be connected to the story and mission structure.
