Snapchat launches new feature to make friend meetups easier

Snapchat has launched Plans, a feature that allows friends to organize activities and meetups without leaving the app. For birthdays, study sessions and weekend plans discussed in group chats, users will be able to set details, send invitations and track attendance. Up to 200 friends can be invited to events, with Bitmoji characters that change based on responses used in the invitations. Automatic reminders will be sent after invitations are sent from one-on-one chats. The “My Plans” tab added to profiles will show upcoming and past events. The feature expands Snapchat, which focuses on social communication, into event organization and aims to reduce the need to ask again who will attend in large groups.

Why it matters

Plans expands Snapchat’s role in communication between friends by turning an idea discussed in chat into a trackable event record. This approach aims to consolidate coordination tasks, such as details becoming scattered across a group chat and attendance having to be checked again, within the same flow. Making attendance information visible shifts the center of communication from the chat stream to event status, particularly for large invitations. For this reason, the feature is relevant to users managing different kinds of meetups, such as birthdays or study sessions, and waiting for responses from many people; past records on the profile also make it possible to track plans. However, it remains unclear to what extent users will adopt this method and how Plans will be used beyond its invitation and reminder functions.
