Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement on the ship accident
Commercial ship at sea

As a result of the collision between the Turkish-flagged commercial vessels “MT Alsu” and “Tuğberk İmamoğlu” off Silivri on 2 September, the “Tugberk İmamoğlu”, which had 10 crew members on board, sank. Of the 6 suspects detained as part of the investigation, A.E. and M.E. were arrested on charges of “causing the deaths of multiple people through negligence.” B.H, N.M, M.G. and S.A. were released under judicial control.

Why it matters

The decisions show that the maritime accident is being examined not only as a technical incident but also in terms of the criminal liability of individuals. The distinction between arrest and judicial control indicates that the investigation is not proceeding with the same legal assessment for all suspects. However, the information currently available does not explain how the collision occurred, which duties and faults were considered decisive, or what the next steps in the investigation will be. Therefore, the decisions do not mean that liability has been definitively established; the causes of the accident and whether the case will proceed to trial remain unclear. In addition, the differing accounts of some basic aspects of the incident make it necessary for the investigating authorities to provide clearer and more consistent statements so that the public can follow the process accurately.
