Trendyol Sanat is bringing the digital installation Seyir by Balkan Karışman, created under the curation of GLOBART, to art enthusiasts for the first time at the 21st edition of Contemporary Istanbul, of which it has been a partner for 4 years. The work, specially produced for the event, will be exhibited at Tersane Istanbul from 23 – 27 September. Seyir brings real-time footage of Haliç into the exhibition space through digital technologies. As the viewer approaches, images from different times appear in their silhouette and the landscape dissolves; when they move away, it comes together again. The work redefines the boundaries between the physical and the digital, and between reality and representation, through perception, distance, the body and movement.
Why it matters
Seyir transforms the viewer from someone who merely observes the work into a participant who directly contributes to the formation of the image. The way approaching and moving away changes the landscape makes visible how the body and distance can generate meaning in a digital work. In this respect, the work goes beyond conveying real-time footage of Haliç and establishes the relationship between physical space and its representation on screen through the viewer’s experience. Its first presentation at the 21st edition of Contemporary Istanbul shows that the event also provides space for works produced with digital technologies and based on interaction. However, how the perception created in the viewer will change through different ways of approaching and moving away will emerge during the exhibition.
