Ministry of Health updates emergency response algorithms for ambulance crews

The Ministry of Health has renewed the emergency medical assistance and care flowcharts to be used by ambulance and emergency medical technicians in their prehospital interventions. With the regulation published in the Official Gazette, the flowcharts were divided into 3 sections: “Adult Algorithms,” “Childbirth and Neonatal Algorithms,” and “Pediatric Algorithms”; a total of 78 subcategories were created.

While the heading “Field Management” was changed to “Scene Management,” the regulation stipulated that teams communicate with the Health Command and Control Center and that the required equipment and team be determined. The BEFAST algorithm for acute stroke, Start Triage for disasters and mass-casualty incidents, and the Jump Start Triage algorithm for children under 8 years old were added. Procedures concerning Crush Syndrome, postpartum hemorrhaging, and the management of acute hypertension during pregnancy were also updated.

Why it matters

The regulation makes the framework to be followed in prehospital emergency interventions for different age groups and clinical conditions more detailed. This concerns the methods ambulance and emergency medical technicians will use when they encounter situations in which time is critical, particularly stroke, disasters, pediatric emergencies, childbirth, and trauma. Regulating communication between scene management and the command and control center makes determining the need for teams and equipment during an intervention part of the process. However, the text does not explain how the new flowcharts will be conveyed to field teams, how compliance in practice will be monitored, or to what extent the updated headings will change decision-making processes in actual cases.
