Affordable microcontrollers are reaching the point where they can run old computer software through emulation. Developed for ESP32 boards, tiny386 offers 386 PC emulation by supporting some of the 486 and 586 instructions and running a modern Linux kernel.
RP2350 adaptations of tiny386 were brought to Waveshare Pi Zero boards through the FRANK emulation platform. The system offers peripherals including VGA and DVI/HDMI; performance is expected to be better than on ESP32. Rather than modern Linux distributions, it is considered suitable for DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and lighter Linux installations.
Why it matters
This development shows that more accessible and diverse hardware options are emerging for running old computer software. Porting tiny386 to RP2350-based boards means that the project is not limited to ESP32 and that connections such as VGA and DVI/HDMI can be used. However, since only some of the supported 386, 486 and 586 instructions are included, compatibility does not mean that every old piece of software will run without problems; modern Linux distributions are not the target of this solution either.
