Perseverance Captures Another Phobos Transit
Solar eclipse from the surface of Mars

Introduction

NASA’s Perseverance rover captured Phobos, one of Mars’ moons, passing in front of the Sun on August 12, 2026, using its Mastcam-Z camera.

Developments

The animation was colorized to reflect how the event would appear when viewed from the Martian surface through protective solar eclipse glasses.

The transits recorded by Perseverance, which landed in Jezero Crater in February 2021, are helping scientists better understand Phobos’ changing orbit.

Details

Phobos is expected to move toward the Martian surface in the very distant future.
