A custom AMOLED wearable device is proving to be a good conversation starter
Electronic wearable necklace and circuitry

OpenChoker, which drew interest at DEF CON, shows that an AMOLED display can be used in a wearable choker. The choker consists of a touchscreen with short RGB LED strips on either side, a PCB containing an RP2350 and a micro SD slot, and an 18650 battery at the back. The LEDs flash while the display shows animations generated in real time. Most of the work on the design went into providing an interface for the display, which had no existing footprint or reference design. Those who will use the Hello Lighting HL020E21-02 2.14″ display can benefit from the board design. A single 18650 battery powered the device for 16 hours, and the voltage measured 3.7 V at the end. While the capacitive touchscreen worked well on the development computer, it became unusable after being mounted on the choker and insulated. In addition, on the final day, the adhesive securing the wires melted the insulation, exposing the copper.

Why it matters

OpenChoker shows that selecting a display alone is not enough for a wearable product; the board, interface, touchscreen layer, and physical mounting must be addressed together. For this reason, the project indicates that those developing similar designs should focus not only on electronic components but also on how the display behaves under real-world operating conditions. The touchscreen feature working on a computer but becoming disabled after insulation highlights the need to repeat prototype testing in the device’s final form. The adhesive securing the wires melted the insulation and exposed the copper, showing that material compatibility is not a separate stage of the design but a matter directly connected to functionality and durability. How the display and mounting issues will be resolved remains unclear.

Background

AMOLED is not a new name in the FikirPilot archive: we published a news article mentioning this name in the last 90 days; that article is dated September 5, 2026.
