Nvidia reverses its DLSS 5 decision, bringing support to RTX 40
Graphics card inside a gaming PC

Nvidia will expand support for its AI-powered image processing technology DLSS 5. The technology will first be made available for the GeForce RTX 50 series; following RTX 50 optimizations, official support work for the RTX 40 series will begin. Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj confirmed this plan to The Verge, but did not promise support for the RTX 30 and RTX 20 series. Mod developers who tried the leaked version also ran DLSS 5 on these cards; however, performance and stability issues were observed. Updated DLSS 5 models are expected to arrive later in fall 2026. Nvidia will officially offer players only an on-off option; model selection, Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity and masking controls will be left to developers. Developers will be able to add some settings to game menus if they wish. While the initial plan was limited to one game and RTX 50, tests showed that the technology could also run on older hardware.

Why it matters

The expansion plan directly concerns RTX 40 owners by ensuring that DLSS 5’s scope is not limited only to new graphics cards; however, no expectation of official support is emerging for RTX 30 and RTX 20 users. Mod tests on older cards show that the technology’s ability to run technically is not sufficient on its own, and that performance and stability issues could determine the experience. The options available to users will also depend more on which controls game developers add to their menus than on the graphics card itself. Therefore, alongside the scope of support, which games will offer DLSS 5 with which settings and how the distribution of updated models will proceed in fall 2026 remain open questions.
