The death toll and number of missing people from the floods that struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region on August 26 have been updated. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority announced that 903 people had died, 4 thousand 247 people were missing, and 592 of those missing were foreign nationals. Chinese officials, meanwhile, reported that 16 people had died in Tibet and that 546 people, 261 of them foreign nationals, were missing.
The floods advanced along the Trishuli River valley, destroying roads, buildings and bridges; more than 40 bridges collapsed in Nepal, and some hydroelectric projects suffered severe damage. Rasuwa administrator Narendra Pariyar said they had been caught unprepared because there had been no heavy rainfall. Scientists examining satellite and seismic data said the disaster was most likely caused by a combination of a high-altitude landslide and a glacial collapse. The collapse of a mass of rock on Mount Langtang Lirung sent millions of tons of rock and ice into the valley. USGS updated the magnitude of the seismic activity to 5.2. The missing include citizens of Australia, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, the US, Nepal, India and Latvia.
