A suspect in Savannah, Georgia, is alleged to have stolen a 2026 BMW X5 worth $90 thousand by claiming to be a professional basketball player and saying that he had multiple vehicles at the hotel. The incident took place at the Hyatt Regency Savannah at around 00.30 on August 14. Security cameras recorded the suspect first removing items from a white Audi, then showing the valet ticket for the BMW to an employee and taking the vehicle. The BMW was reportedly a replacement vehicle provided to a customer staying at the hotel. It is not known how the valet ticket came into the suspect’s possession or which basketball player he impersonated. The vehicle was located in Myrtle Beach, approximately 365 km from Savannah, and authorities were asked to flag it as stolen; it was not disclosed whether it was recovered. The investigation revealed that the Audi had also been reported stolen a day earlier. The suspect was also linked to the theft of a 2019 Toyota C-HR from the Fairfield Inn on August 5. Images of the suspect, described as a Black man between 20 and 30 years old, were released.
