Microsoft is expanding Auto SR integrated into Windows 11 to Core Ultra Series 3 processors based on Intel Panther Lake. The technology renders the game at a lower resolution and uses the NPU and integrated GPU to upscale it to the display resolution, reducing the GPU load; on Panther Lake, the input resolution rises to 1080p. The feature does not require developer support, does not replace in-game XeSS-like options, and Microsoft recommends those options first when they are available. Auto SR connects directly to the Windows display pipeline. Windows 11 24H2 or later, up-to-date graphics and NPU drivers, and a display with at least 1080p resolution are required. DirectX 10+ compatible x64, x64 emulation, and Arm64 games are supported, while DirectX 9, Vulkan, OpenGL, and HDR are not supported. Panther Lake’s NPU 5 offers 50 TOPS, while the Intel Arc B390 offers 12 Xe cores; total processing power reaches 180 TOPS.
Why it matters
This expansion aims to make upscaling available at the operating system level without depending on individual integrations by game developers. However, prioritizing in-game options when they are available shows that the feature is not positioned as a universal solution that replaces existing methods.
