MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli stated in a written statement issued for 26 September Turkish Language Day that Turkish is an indispensable value carrying the nation’s culture, memory and collective consciousness. Bahçeli said that language enables morality, traditions, memories and ways of life to be passed down between generations, and noted that Turkey’s existence and future are directly connected to the future of Turkish. He emphasized that the responsibility to protect, preserve, develop and pass Turkish on to future generations belongs to the state and the nation.
Bahçeli said that the weakening of Turkish in the face of other languages could damage cultural belonging, national consciousness and a shared identity. He stated that the great cultural heritage extending from the Orkhon Monuments to Mahmud al-Kashgari, from Ahmad Yasawi to Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey, and from Yunus Emre to Ali-Shir Nava’i has been carried through Turkish.
Calling for Turkish to be strengthened as a language of science, art, literature and thought, Bahçeli said that the language’s own resources should be developed to counter the excessive use of foreign concepts and words, and celebrated Turkish Language Day.
