Bahçeli’s 3 October Turkic World Day message: Cooperation among Turkic states should be strengthened

MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli called for stronger solidarity and cooperation among the Turkic states and fellow Turkic peoples in his message marking October 3 Turkic World Day.

Bahçeli said the Nakhchivan Agreement signed by Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on October 3, 2009, was a turning point that placed multilateral cooperation on an institutional footing. He noted that the foundations of Türk Keneşi were laid by the agreement and that the organization became operational following the summit in Istanbul in 2010.

Bahçeli stated that relations had developed not only through political and diplomatic contacts but also in the fields of the economy, transportation, energy, education, culture, security, science and technology, and recalled that Türk Keneşi was renamed the Organization of Turkic States at the 8th Summit in Istanbul on November 12, 2021.

Bahçeli stressed that transforming the common heritage into tangible gains and advancing the will expressed in the Nakhchivan Agreement were important for the influence of the Turkic world. Bahçeli respectfully commemorated those working toward the ideal of “unity in language, ideas and action,” thanked individuals and institutions, and wished for the unity, solidarity and future of the Turkic world to endure.

Why it matters

The message shows that relations with the Turkic world are being addressed not only through cultural affinity but within an institutional framework encompassing areas such as the economy, transportation, energy, education, security, science and technology. This framework reinforces the expectation that contacts between Türkiye and the other Turkic states will be sustained through joint efforts across different policy areas. The emphasis on common heritage points to an understanding of cooperation that concerns not only state institutions but also educational, cultural and scientific circles. However, the statement does not specify through which steps and priorities the existing political will will be transformed into tangible gains; therefore, how the cooperation will be implemented and what results it will produce remain open questions.
