Mercedes-Benz to Discontinue 3 Models: Models Revealed
Luxury car covered with a cloth

Mercedes-Benz will simplify its lineup by revising its electric vehicle strategy. The company has confirmed that it plans to discontinue at least 3 models starting with the 2027 model year. According to a brand spokesperson speaking to Car and Driver, the list includes:

  • Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan (standard and AMG versions)
  • Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance
  • Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV

The EQE was developed as an electric alternative to the E-Class; the electric CLA and planned all-electric C-Class have made the model’s positioning questionable. The plug-in hybrid S63 E Performance produced 802 hp and 1,430 Nm of torque with its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine and hybrid system. The Maybach EQS 680 SUV, meanwhile, combined EQS SUV technology with luxury and bespoke design elements. Mercedes will continue investing in AMG’s internal-combustion performance engines.

Why it matters

The decision shows that Mercedes-Benz is reorganizing the positioning of models in its electric lineup that approach one another in terms of segment and intended use. Although the EQE was designed as an electric option for the E-Class, its struggle to differentiate itself from the electric CLA and planned all-electric C-Class demonstrates that model variety alone is not a sustainable strategy. The removal of the S63 E Performance and Maybach EQS 680 SUV from the list also shows that the simplification covers not only mainstream electric sedans but also high-performance hybrids and top-tier luxury models. At the same time, Mercedes’ continued investment in AMG’s internal-combustion performance engines shows that the electric transition is not progressing in the same direction across all product groups within the brand, while leaving open the question of which products will replace the discontinued models.
