Although speech recognition systems have improved compared with the past, solutions on phones mostly send voice data to the services of selected major companies. It is possible to dictate to a computer while keeping the data local. Although Windows has an advanced speech feature, according to an estimate in a video, 99% of users do not use it. Linux, meanwhile, has numerous open-source options and successful models, but installation and use can be difficult because of the diversity of systems.
Linux solutions need to address issues such as ARM support, integration with desktop environments, and the use of GPU and processor instructions. Transferring recognized text to different applications can also cause problems: While this process is easy on X11, Wayland requires a different method.
Although KDE Connect makes it possible to use a phone as a keyboard and mouse on a Linux computer, it focuses on character-based input and does not offer a suitable method for voice use. In addition, the phone sends data to the cloud. Speech Note works more like a notepad with speech recognition and did not perform well on the system tested. A separate optional shortcut can send speech to the selected AI engine for editing after converting it to text; this engine can also be local.
Why it matters
Local speech recognition offers Linux users who do not want to send voice data to services operated by large companies an alternative to cloud-based phone solutions. However, ARM support, hardware utilization, desktop integration, and input differences between X11 and Wayland show that the user experience does not depend solely on model quality. Handy’s reduced setup and configuration burden makes these tools more accessible to people who do not want to deal with technical details, although it does not completely eliminate the need for additional tools on some systems. While the option to send text to the selected AI engine expands the workflow, whether the data remains local depends on the engine used. The fact that the comparison is based on the experience with a specific computer leaves open whether the same result can be achieved with different processors and desktop configurations.
