Super Valid Designs applied the idea that air-filled items can be compressed to provide more storage space to a wardrobe. The existing wardrobe held approximately 21 coats when compressed with both hands, while its capacity was 10 coats with one hand. Inspired by a store layout in which carpets rotated like the pages of a book, the designer adapted a similar hinged mechanism used to store large plans for the wardrobe. In the new two-door wardrobe, the hangers rotate outward, allowing access to the coats without disturbing the others and enabling the coats to be compressed as the doors close. The smaller wardrobe holds 24 coats with one hand and more than 30 with both hands. The upper and lower compartments are used for shoes and hats, while the dedicated section is for a robot vacuum cleaner. Such wardrobe improvements are said to be rare.
Why it matters
The design addresses wardrobe capacity not only by increasing its internal volume but also by turning an otherwise unused compression movement into part of the storage process. This approach makes it possible to rethink the use of space, particularly for users who want to organize different items such as coats, shoes and hats together in a limited area. The outward rotation of the hangers aims to increase capacity without completely sacrificing accessibility, creating a use-related advantage beyond simply fitting more items inside. However, questions remain about how practical the prototype’s capacity and mechanism are in everyday use, how the hinged structure will hold up in the long term, and whether this arrangement can be adapted to different types of clothing.
