OpenAI announced on Thursday that it had made two new features for ChatGPT’s online shopping experience available globally. Powered by the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, the virtual try-on tool allows users to upload a selfie or full-length photo to see how clothing and accessories would look on them. Product images can also be used for this purpose.
The “Favorites” feature allows products to be saved to a library in the app, along with virtual try-on images. Users can also ask ChatGPT to find items that match a style they describe or search for purchasable alternatives based on photos of celebrities’ outfits.
Why it matters
These features enable ChatGPT to help with more than just finding products for online shopping; they also allow users to visually evaluate and organize the selection process. Virtual try-on adds a new layer to the decision-making process, particularly for those who want to examine how an item of clothing or an accessory looks on them before making a purchase. The options to search based on a description and find similar products from celebrities’ outfits take product discovery beyond being limited to a specific brand or search term. The Favorites library makes comparison easier by keeping products found through try-on results in one place; however, it is not yet clear to what extent this visual and product-focused flow will change users’ shopping preferences.
