JBL challenges Sonos with its new multi-room Cove speakers
A stylish speaker in a modern living room

Although JBL is known for its portable Bluetooth and party speakers, it is entering the multi-room home audio market with its Cove series. The series can be used on its own, as a stereo pair, or by linking speakers together to compete with Sonos and Bose’s new Lifestyle Ultra speakers. The three models will go on sale in black or white starting September 13th. The $229.95 Cove M1 includes three 0.75-inch tweeters and one 4-inch woofer, but requires wired power. The $399.95 Cove P1 supports Dolby Atmos and, according to JBL, can play for up to 14 hours on battery power. The flagship $449.95 Cove X1 operates while plugged in and offers four 1.25-inch tweeters, two 4-inch woofers, and Dolby Atmos. The speakers connect over Wi-Fi and are controlled through the JBL One app. The series also includes automatic tuning, “AI Sound Boost,” and “Music Follows Me,” which transfers audio to the room you are in.

Why it matters

JBL’s Cove series shows that the brand is expanding from portable, party-focused products to sound systems designed to cover different rooms in the home. As a result, the development is relevant to consumers who want to use multiple devices together instead of a single speaker and plan to build their system around the area where it will be used. Differences between the models in terms of battery life, power outlet requirements, Dolby Atmos support, and audio hardware mean that not only the price but also how the room is used will be a deciding factor in the choice. Wi-Fi connectivity and the JBL One app bring device management together within a shared system, while the automatic tuning and Music Follows Me features support the multi-room listening experience. However, the series’ true competitive strength will depend on how smoothly these features work in practice.
