Thank-you letter from Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez to a high school in Kayseri
The letter displayed in the school hallway

Teachers and students from Mustafa Özkan Anatolian High School in İncesu district of Kayseri sent the “Kıvılcım Dergisi,” which contains poetry, articles and literary writings, to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in June 2026 and invited him to the school. Sanchez sent a signed letter of thanks, stating that he had read the magazine with interest. In the letter, he said that he would be unable to accept the invitation due to his heavy workload and a packed schedule. School Principal Fatih Şahin said that the magazine had been prepared to broaden the students’ horizons. Şahin said that the students were pleased with the letter and had thanked Sanchez. Referring to Sanchez’s support for the Palestinian cause, Şahin said that they were happy for this reason. A special section was created at the school for the letter, and it was made available for visitors to read.

Why it matters

This correspondence shows that a school magazine prepared by students did not remain merely an internal project, but was able to reach a political figure known to the international public. The reply letter provides a concrete example of how students’ efforts being seen by their intended recipient can affect motivation and the sense of productivity in an educational environment. However, since the contact did not turn into a face-to-face meeting due to the packed schedule, it remains unclear whether the invitation will evolve into a long-term partnership or a new channel of communication for the school. Displaying the letter at the school, meanwhile, turns a one-off response into an experience visible to visitors and part of the students’ collective memory.
