iRobot unveiled its Roomba Duo concept robot at IFA 2026 in Berlin. The system combines a powerful main unit that vacuums and mops large areas with the smaller Roomba Plus 757. The small robot, carried on top, is lowered by a mechanical arm to clean narrow areas such as under tables and in corners that the main device cannot reach.
Roomba Duo was also designed as an autonomous mobile station carrying clean- and dirty-water tanks and a dust bag. It maps the home, detects obstacles and searches for dirt using a lidar- and camera-based navigation system. According to iRobot executive Adam Pope, the main unit is the company’s most powerful vacuum to date and approaches upright vacuums in terms of capacity. The device can perform steam cleaning with a wide roller mop that applies 46 newtons of downward pressure; during the demonstration, it picked up pasta from a carpet and then washed the carpet.
iRobot’s new CEO, Hao Li, introduced the product with the words, “The future of floor care has a familiar name.” Li comes from Picea, which acquired iRobot out of bankruptcy earlier this year.
The mechanical arm appeared to operate smoothly and quickly during demonstrations; however, questions remain about the device’s suitability for home use and its long-term durability. Roomba Duo is still at the concept stage. Its price and release date have not been announced, and some of its technical specifications are still being developed. Pope said that feedback received during the development process would be evaluated.
Why it matters
The approach presented by Roomba Duo aims to overcome the limitation of a single device’s ability to reach every area during home cleaning; however, whether it will actually save time and effort in daily use remains unanswered. In particular, how reliably the mechanical arm will operate in narrow spaces, whether it will be able to maintain its durability through repeated use, and to what extent it will be useful in different home layouts remain open questions. The fact that the product is still at the concept stage means that the capabilities demonstrated cannot be considered equivalent to its final technical specifications and mass-production conditions. The fact that its price and release date have not been announced also currently prevents interested users from comparing the system with existing cleaning options. How this design, presented during iRobot’s new management period, will be developed will be determined by the elements to which the company applies the feedback.
