The maximum capacity shown in Settings on iPhone devices may drop from 100% on a new device to 99%, 95% or lower over the course of use. Every 1% decline does not mean that the battery needs to be replaced; usage time, performance and service alerts should also be considered when making that decision.
As lithium-ion batteries chemically age, a decline in capacity is normal. Apple states that it designs iPhone batteries to retain 80% of their original capacity after a certain number of full charge cycles, with the cycle target varying by model. 80% does not mean that the phone is unusable; however, usage time on a single charge may be shorter. Replacement may be beneficial if frequent charging, unexpected shutdowns or abnormal behavior occur.
The battery health value is an estimate calculated by the battery management system. Aging can reduce the ability to deliver power instantly, leading to shutdowns and performance management. A heavily used phone at 82% may require replacement more than a trouble-free device at 79%. Screen time may decrease below 80%. The device continues to perform calls, run apps and charge; processes that require high power make the difference more noticeable. Low temperatures and service messages should also be taken into account.
Why it matters
Treating the battery health percentage as the sole indicator for replacement can lead to a functioning battery being replaced unnecessarily or the actual problem being overlooked. From the user’s perspective, the key criteria are how long the phone lasts in daily use, whether it experiences unexpected shutdowns, and whether the system displays a service warning. Since devices with the same percentage may have different usage histories and current performance levels, the decision should not be based solely on the value shown on the screen. This approach also prevents phones below 80% from automatically being considered unusable; however, the extent of the need for frequent charging and the impact during high-power operations should be assessed separately for each user.
