Observations made with the 4-meter solar telescope in Hawaii have revealed new findings on the interaction between plasma and magnetic fields in the Sun’s photosphere. In the study published in Nature, David Kuridze and his team observed Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in the photosphere, caused by velocity differences in fluids. These instabilities, which are also seen in clouds in Earth’s atmosphere, were confirmed through MURaM simulations to guide plasma transport in the Sun’s photosphere.
