Game of Thrones actor Maisie Williams said she paid a witch through Etsy so she could land a role in a film before playing the witch Antonia Owens in Practical Magic 2 (Practical Magic 2). Speaking to British Vogue, Williams said she recited the words she had been given to repeat every night, but that it “didn’t work.” The actor also said she avoided walking over three manhole covers in a row because of an old British superstition associated with bad luck.
In the sequel, which arrives approximately 30 years later, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who remain under the shadow of an ancient curse. Williams plays Antonia, Sally’s adult daughter and the younger sister of Joey King’s character, Kylie. Directed by Susanne Bier, the film was adapted from Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic and follows Kylie’s efforts to break the curse after her boyfriend is involved in a fatal accident.
Kidman said the film is about “sisterhood and family.” Evan Rachel Wood, who played Kylie in the first film, said she had not spoken to Joey King about the new production. Practical Magic 2 will be released on 11 September 2026.
Why it matters
Williams’s account juxtaposes the curse theme in the production’s fictional world with the actor’s pre-film rituals; however, there is no finding that these practices affected the role. The sequel brings a new generation into the story through Sally’s adult daughter, Antonia, and Kylie’s younger sister, taking the story established nearly 30 years ago beyond simply bringing back its former leads. As a result, family and sisterhood become central elements in the effort to break the curse. Adapted from Alice Hoffman’s novel, the screenplay leaves open questions about how the balance within the Owens family will change after Kylie’s boyfriend’s fatal accident and how the new characters will position themselves in this struggle.
