Abiy Ahmed’s timeline
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was sworn in last Monday, officially beginning his second term. The new term follows the seventh general election, held on June 1 with the participation of more than 54 million voters.
Remarks on Eritrea
Among Ahmed’s priorities, the goal of securing access to the Red Sea and preserving the country’s unity in the face of “external threats” stand out. Egypt and Eritrea object to this initiative by Ethiopia, which has been landlocked since Eritrea gained its independence in 1993; Ahmed now views his former ally Eritrea as the opposing side. In his address to parliament, Ahmed said his country is ready to fend off threats.
Details from Zahid
Researcher Zahid Zeydan noted that the new government’s agenda includes combating the high cost of living, addressing the needs of the regions, and managing the effects of global crises; he pointed out that the crises in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are affecting Ethiopia through oil prices. Writer Abdüşşekur Abdüssamed, for his part, emphasized the need to continue economic reforms and manage their social consequences.
