Researchers at Maynooth University have developed an experimental computer that performs calculations using DNA molecules and does not require a silicon chip or a continuous power supply. According to the study published in Nature, the system can run 10 different programs, including addition, multiplication and division. However, the preparation, heating, cooling and reading of the results require laboratory equipment; while adding 10 and 3 takes 30 seconds, an experiment involving the addition of numbers between approximately 11 million and 34 million took up to 14 hours to complete. Abeer Eshra said the system was not intended to be faster than conventional computers.

Why it matters

This study challenges the assumption that computing can be performed only with silicon-based hardware and a continuous flow of electricity; it shows that biological molecules can be used to process information. In this respect, the development intersects research areas in computer science and molecular biology, and is of particular interest to those following experimental computing methods. However, the system’s practical value will be assessed not only by the operations it performs, but also by how feasible those operations are, given the preparation and measurement processes dependent on laboratory equipment. The fundamental question that remains is whether DNA-based computing can be taken beyond the experimental setting and turned into a usable method for more complex tasks; the current findings show that this is not an approach focused on the speed of conventional computers.
