DJI announces Romo 2, the second generation of its Romo robot vacuum series.
Robot vacuum in a minimalist home

DJI has announced Romo 2, the second generation of its Romo robot vacuum series. The company stated that the new models are quieter and more powerful, and can navigate small steps and obstacles more effectively. The two models, the transparent P2 and opaque A2, feature improved navigation that can avoid cables and objects as small as 2mm, as well as transparent surfaces such as mirrors and glass. The “human-like reasoning and concept transfer” feature is said to help the device learn from obstacles it encounters and adapt to new objects.

Thanks to two feet on its underside, Romo 2 can overcome a single step up to 4cm (1.5in) high or two steps approximately twice that height; however, it cannot climb stairs. The device reaches 36,000Pa of suction power on carpets and uses longer brush and mop arms to clean the edges and undersides of furniture more effectively. DJI says it has achieved an 85% reduction in noise levels.

Serious security vulnerabilities in the first Romo led to thousands of devices worldwide being compromised, allowing access to home layouts, cameras and microphones, and even enabling complete remote control. Although DJI addressed the issues, it suffered a loss of trust. Romo 2’s Local Data Mode feature disconnects the DJI Home app from the internet, preventing the synchronization of photos and camera footage. Users will be able to turn off the camera and microphone and delete recorded data. The feature will come to Romo 2 in Q4 this year, followed later by the first Romo models.

The P2 costs €1,299, while the A2 is €100 cheaper. A US launch is unlikely; restrictions targeting DJI and the FCC’s new ban on foreign-made robot vacuums make it even more difficult.

Why it matters

Romo 2’s key distinction is not just its cleaning performance, but that privacy controls are placed directly in the user’s hands following the security issues in the previous model. The options to disconnect from the internet, turn off the camera and microphone, and delete recordings could be decisive for users evaluating the device in terms of how images and data from inside the home are processed; however, it is unclear to what extent these functions will be enabled by default in the new series and when they will reach the first Romo models. Improvements to obstacle detection and step climbing expand the limits of use in homes with different floor surfaces, although stair support is not offered. Its high price and regulatory obstacles in the US could narrow the markets the product reaches and the areas in which it can compete.
