Strait of Hormuz summary
[Silent H], before he had even heard of the Strait of Hormuz, set out to produce his own fuel back when diesel was cheap; his goal was diesel he could use in his vehicle. For biodiesel, he chose the algae Chlorella Vulgaris. This species seemed ideal because it is easy to grow, simple to separate from the medium since it sinks to the bottom once mature, and has a high oil content.

However, the cell walls were extremely hard; unable to break the wall, he could extract only a few grams of oil via solvent extraction. So he switched to sunflowers, crushed the seeds in an oil press, and converted the resulting oil into biodiesel by separating out the glycerin through transesterification; in the end, he obtained a pint of fuel. The site had previously covered algae cultivation, but those algae were intended for non-fuel purposes.
