DIY Jet Turbine Assembly and Testing
Handmade turbine on a workshop bench

AlfMart CNC Garage’s work on YouTube has reached the testing stage after completing the assembly of a DIY jet turbine following months of effort. Despite appearing simple, the starting mechanism proved difficult. While the extreme operating conditions of turbines require tight tolerances, the materials also need to be carefully selected and tested. The outer body was made from a child-sized steel flask and a commercial gas cylinder, with the parts customized down to the rotor. The video shows the assembly and instructions. Following the assembly, an RPM sensor circuit and an electric starter that provides rotation before ignition were added. Initial tests revealed problems requiring upgrades to the starter motor and clutch. Dynamic balancing is essential before the first ignition; a new setup will be designed and built for this purpose. The setup is said to be more advanced than the one used for rotor balancing.

Why it matters

This work shows that putting the parts together in a homemade jet turbine is not enough to achieve reliable and controlled operation. The problems that emerged in the starter system and clutch reveal that the project still requires basic engineering verifications before the first ignition. The need for dynamic balancing is particularly critical; failing to properly balance a rotor operating at high speed could be decisive not only for performance but also for safety. For this reason, the content makes visible not only the construction stages for those interested in similar mechanical projects, but also the role of testing, fault detection, and measurement setups in prototypes. What remains unclear is how the advanced setup to be designed will affect the balancing process and whether the technical deficiencies before the first ignition can be resolved.
