China’s Alibaba to bring the “cloud” to Turkey
A modern data center corridor

Alibaba, the Chinese technology and e-commerce company also known for Trendyol, in which it owns an 86.5% stake, will expand its overseas data centers. In the next 12 months, its first cloud regions will be established in Türkiye, Finland and the Netherlands; its data center presence in Malaysia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, France and Hong Kong will be expanded. Cloud regions are physical sites consisting of independent data centers connected by high-speed networks. The announcement was made ahead of Xi Jinping’s meeting with Donald Trump in Washington. Alibaba, the owner of the Qwen model and one of the pioneers of China’s artificial intelligence sector, is targeting models with 5 to 10 trillion parameters, backed by more than 20 gigawatts of global capacity by 2032.

Why it matters

This move means that, for institutions and businesses in Türkiye that need cloud services, data processing infrastructure will be supported by physical capacity within the country. For Alibaba, increasing its presence in different countries is part of a strategy to distribute globally the computing power required to develop and operate artificial intelligence models. The company’s long-term capacity targets show that data centers are important not only for storage and network services but also for artificial intelligence work requiring high processing power. However, since it has not been disclosed which services the structure in Türkiye will offer, at what capacity and to which institutions, the plan’s impact on local users will depend on these details.
