Crystalverse background
Copper sulfate crystals are among the most spectacular crystals you can grow at home; even a simple setup built with scrap copper and vinegar is enough. For those who want bigger ones, a new video from Crystalverse expands on an old blog post. Copper sulfate can also be purchased directly; it is commonly sold for the following purposes:
- fungicide,
- root killer,
- drying agent.
The key is a saturated solution: water near boiling yields a mesmerizing blue liquid, provided it is free of contaminants.
Evaluation note
Extra copper sulfate forms crystallization points at the bottom of the jar, keeping them away from the large crystal. Then a seed crystal is suspended in the solution. The source of the blue color is the water molecules; if the crystal loses its water, it turns white. Slow growth gives better results. During growth that lasts for months:
- the solution must be carefully managed,
- rival crystals at the bottom must be removed,
- the temperature must be kept constant.
