Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin assessed the education agenda during a live broadcast on Haber Global. Stating that attacks in schools have become widespread worldwide, Tekin said this has turned into an epidemic and requires a societal struggle.
Tekin explained that children must be taught fundamental rights and freedoms along with a culture of coexistence, and that this is also at the core of the Turkish Century Education Model. Noting that social media is more decisive on children than family or school, Tekin conveyed that according to research on peer bullying, nearly 80 percent of children are exposed to violence on social media platforms.
Tekin listed the security measures taken in schools as follows:
- Armed and unarmed security personnel
- Camera recordings and movable cameras
- Emergency warning systems
Emphasizing that police measures alone are not sufficient, Tekin stated that it is necessary to work with different stakeholders, starting with families. He recalled that the “Parent School” program launched in this context has been made mandatory this year for parents of children newly starting primary and middle school. Tekin noted that technology companies must also take responsibility, adding that they are in contact with companies regarding parent-child filters.
